A diferencia de virt-manager, virt-install es una herramienta de la línea de comandos  que le permite crear KVM huéspedes en un servidor. Usted puede preguntarse: "Pero yo puedo utilizar vmbuilder para hacer esto, ¿por qué debo usar virt-install?" La diferencia entre virt-install y vmbuilder es que es vmbuilder sirve para la creación de clientes Ubuntu basadas en ésta, mientras que virt-install le permite instalar todo tipo de sistemas operativos (por ejemplo Linux, Windows, Solaris, FreeBSD, OpenBSD) y la distribución de un invitado, sólo con virt-manager.
